Patio designs for limited space (small area):

Patios are generally designed to catch the sun. Not necessarily, in warmer areas, the heat of the midday sun, but enough sun to give you that good sense of relaxation and well being that we get when exposed to lots of vitamin D.

  •  You can incorporate plants on the patio for color.  Some creative choices that you can use are hanging baskets and small pots.
  • Roof tops, balconies, and city gardens are sometime surrounded by tall walls and boundaries. Trying to soften these with pots and planters of annuals doesn't work as well as a specimen tree or shrub as a background.
  • Using a lot of plants to create a lush look can be tricky. Repetition of a few varieties is the key to using a lot of plants in small gardens.
  • A comfortable seating arrangement is necessary in order to convey an inviting atmosphere. First designate the area to be the pretty patio. Then clear, clean and spruce it up.
  • Decide how the patio will function for the family, and plan the space to allow for the maximum number of people, activities and aesthetics.
  • Add a little bit of color. Paint the door, add flower boxes below windows or use shutters to frame the windows. Be daring with color and remember that it can easily be changed or repainted for fall.
  • Check the lighting on the patio for evening reading or entertaining. Strings of lights in trees, wrapped around the railing or under an umbrella will look terrific at night. Tiki torches and hurricane lamps also add ambiance to an outdoor setting.
  • Use a lot of plants in decorative or unique containers for added color. Bring in a bookcase or bakers rack from another room to hold interesting outdoor things as well as to add height.
  • Adding lots of decor to your garden is a great way of adding interest. But try and keep the different pieces of decor related to each other. Too much unrelated stuff can also look like clutter.
  • Small pools and running water are still another method of creating illusions in small gardens. Even if your space only allows for a small pool that runs along the bottom edge of a wall it will add a lot of depth to your garden.
  • Some small gardens only allow enough space for water features that sit flat against a wall, but if you can allow just this much space it will bring much needed light and movement into the area.
  • Retaining walls, walk ways, and other decorative landscaping projects are relatively easy to create. They are a great way to add the textures of wood and rock into small gardens.
  • Dividing small gardens into "rooms"is an excellent way of creating the illusion of more space. This can be done in a lot of different ways. Here are just a few examples.
  • A great way of dividing a small area is by creating different levels. This can be as simple as adding raised beds or creating a sitting area that steps up onto a different platform. This method creates a distinct, visible separation. An upper level can actually be transformed into a whole new world or "theme" from the lower level. You'll be amazed at the "illusion" of space this creates.
  • Another way is by using gazebos, bridges, arbors, and trellises to separate and divide one area from another. This will not only create a sense of flow but also a sense of mystery inviting you on to see what you can't see on the other side. In this way you've created another room and the illusion that the garden goes on and on.
